Wait a minute! I'm eating healthy, I'm doing my energy exercises regularly, I'm talking to G-d every day, I say the blessing after I use the bathroom (although admittedly, not always with great concentration…) So what's going on here? Why am I not super-healthy in the peak of good health?
The short answer is: I am.
So then, why did I wake up today with two eyefuls of gunk?
To understand what's going on, we need to look at another basic principle of holistic healing, namely that illness is not necessarily a bad thing. Holistically, when someone gets a cold, or a fever, or starts throwing up, it's because their body is undertaking a 'spring-cleaning' activity, where it's getting rid of all the toxins and trash that have accumulated over time.
The body is sending a message to the person to slow down and get things back into balance, and if we're aware of what's going on, we can approach illness with a very different mindset.
That's not to say that these things are particularly enjoyable, and depending on your daily responsibilities, spiritual bent and knowledge of alternative ways of dealing with minor illnesses, there are still essential oils you can use, and other practices and energy exercises you can do to minimise the symptoms and speed-up the process, without resorting to drugs.
One reason to try to avoid drugs is that they usually just deal with the symptoms, not the fundamental causes of illness. Another reason to avoid drugs, especially for minor illnesses, is that the body is 'ill' because it's streaming toxins and junk out via all the snot, or the phlegm, or the sweat and the fever. If you use drugs to artificially stop that process before it's completed, all that stuff is still in there, and will contribute to you feeling distinctly unwell, tired, bloated, stiff, fuzzy-headed, headache-y, whatever the symptoms might be.
But that's not all: drugs themselves are unnatural substances, and consequently the body struggles mightily to try to deal with them. If the immune system is already overloaded and trying to clean house, shoving a whole other bunch of toxic chemicals into your body is only going to complicate matters.
So back to the eye: remember, our principles of emuna tell us that:
1) G-d's doing everything
2) It's all for our good
3) He's trying to tell us something
For a couple of weeks now, I've been having gallbladder issues again. The gallbladder meridian goes through the gallbladder, and up through the eyes. I knew it had to be connected.
The Jewish Energy Medicine way is to go and look straight at the emotions, and the soul-dimension of the physical problem, because I already know that G-d did it for a good reason, so the physical details of how it actually got that way don't interest me so much.
In Chinese medicine's 5 Elements system, the gallbladder meridian is associated with wood and Spring. I went over to my 'Touch for Health' manual and looked up some of their suggestion for what it might mean, emotionally, if you're experiencing issues with the gallbladder meridian. Here's what I read:
Season: Spring: What in your life needs to be revived, renewed or reborn? What seeds do you need to plant?
Climate: Wind: Are you being blown away by uncertainty and change?
Odor: Rancid: What do you need to let go of that was useful, but is now rancid?
Taste: Sour: Has something that was good gone bad.
Emotion: Anger: Is your anger directed appropriately?
Uh, tick, tick and tick.
I'm currently in a stage of tremendous uncertainty and change in my personal life, against the backdrop of what appears to be another Intifada in Israel. I'm also trying to go in a new direction, in a lot of different ways, and to get out of old 'patterns' that have been harming me for years. And I've also been pretty angry about some of the big challenges G-d has sent me recently.
So, it was bang on the money. The next stage was to deal with it the Jewish Energy Medicine way: First, I flushed the gallbladder meridian (which means I traced it backwards once, and forward three times;) then I held the sedating and strengthening acupressure points for the gallbladder meridian.
Then, I did some 'tapping teshuva', using Energy Psychology to clear out my anger, and also my hate. Let's just say, there was a lot of stuff in there that wasn't very nice, and that was clearly not doing me a whole lot of good.
The eyes are still a bit sticky, but they've stopped hurting, and I feel much happier and lighter in myself.
So you see, even though I got sick this week, it was just what I needed to let go of a whole bunch of poisonous stuff, and to develop a much healthier outlook, in a lot of ways.
