When a person is feeling depressed, it's very hard to feel joyful about anything, even when G-d is commanding you to do it, and even when you're going into a whole holiday devoted to joy.
But even when you've tried all the 'talking' options to get out of depression and got no-where, and all the 'thinking' options, and hit a brick wall, there is still a whole lot of stuff you can do, energy-wise.
One of the most amazing things I've learnt so far with my energy medicine training to become an Energy Tracker (I passed the exam last week, btw!) - is that the energy of depression is completely different from the energy of joy, and vibrant good health.
When a person is in good physical and emotional health, the energy in their body crosses over, from side to side, and from top to bottom, and from front to back. Just the same way as G-d keeps all the planets circulating around the sun, and planet earth itself spinning on its axis, the energy that makes our bodies 'work' also goes round and round, in Divinely-orchestrated harmony, right down to the level of our cells and atoms.
BUT - when a person is depressed, that's not what's going on in their bodies. That person's energy is stuck just going straight up and down, in a pattern called 'homolateral'.
When a person's energy is consistently homolateral, they'll be depressed; they'll be very 'negative' about life; and they'll probably also be chronically ill or chronically exhausted.
I don't know what comes first, whether a person gets homolateral, and then gets depressed and ill, or vice-versa. But I can tell you that there are some very simple energy medicine exercises that can start to turn the energy around, which then pull the person's state of mind with it.
Within a month, the body starts to feel stronger and more 'connected' back to Hashem and life; the person regains the strength and the happiness they need to start healing, physically, from whatever chronic health issues there may be. And then, they have the optimism and state of mind they need to start dealing with the underlying circumstances and issues of their life that spun them out into depression in the first place (or which were brought on by being in a weakened, 'homolateral' state.)
There are a few exercises to try, but the main one is very simple:
Sit on your couch. Touch the same elbow to the same knee (alternating sides) 12 times. Then touch the opposite elbow to the opposite knee (alternating sides) 12 times. To both sets another two times, ending with alternate sides.
Remember, these exercises are NOT about feeling the burn; they're about getting the energy to start crossing over again. So if you are ill, or feel very weak, you can take them as slowly as you need to, and they will still do the job.
If someone has been very homolateral, or very down and depressed, or ill for a while, these exercises need to be done twice a day for at least a month, before the improvements really start to hold for any length of time.
But with G-d's help, the improvements will come, and they will stay. Once you have more energy again, you can keep it crossing over by dancing, in-line skating, juggling, walking, playing with poi balls - any activity which encourages you to use opposing arms and legs.
G-d is so good to us. Healing doesn't have to be complicated. As I'm learning in my practise, the very best cures are often the most simple. We just have to believe it enough to try it.
