Sometimes, it's easier to see things as a picture than it is to describe them in words, so I hope this will help to make it clearer about what sort of behaviour is Erev Rav-ish, and what sort of behaviour is authentically Jewish, especially as we live in such troubled times, where so many things are messed-up and mixed-up, spiritually.
Maybe it's already getting clearer why the Zohar blamed the Erev Rav for all the Jews' problems throughout history. If we got rid of the load of negative character traits on the left (particularly the lashon hara...), can you imagine how different the Jewish world (and our own lives...) would look right now?
Rav Arush recently said that there is more lashon hara spoken (and believed) in one day now, then from the very creation of the world. He also warned everyone not to believe anything they're being told by anybody, because there are so many lies floating around, and so many disturbed people spreading them around all over the place without even a thought about the halachot of speaking evilly, and believing other people's evil reports.
This is the work to be done in this lead-up to the time of Moshiach, and each and every one of us has a part to play, because as the Vilna Gaon told us, whoever doesn't participate in the fight against the Erev Rav [character traits] is defacto a partner with them, and it would have been better for them if they'd never been born.
And man, do we have our work cut out for us...
