I was planning to do a whole bunch of posts here on Emunaroma - and I'm still planning to do that - but in the meantime, there are only so many hours in the day. So, let me start by sticking up a bunch of links to things I've already written, both here and on spiritual self-help.
I will come back to this topic again (and again!!!) but in the meantime, here's some useful information to get you started:
- THIS POST explains about the 'stress response', and the different ways it can change people's behaviour, and bring out their bad middot.
- THIS POST explains a little about what Complex PTSD is, what causes is (trauma...) and why C-PTSD is underneath most of the 'mental illnesses' being identified (and incorrectly treated...) by psychiatry.
- THIS POST explains why prescribed medications don't really help long-term to improve mental health outcomes, and actually only make things worse for the people taking them. (There's a lot more articles about this on spiritual self-help, and there's a search box there you can use to find them.)
- THIS POST brings a number of quotes from eminent scientists stating the infamous 'chemical imbalance' simply doesn't exist.
Books to read on this subject include:
Bessel van der Kolk's: The body keeps the score
Pete Walker's: COMPLEX PTSD: From surviving to thriving
Robert Whitaker's: Anatomy of an epidemic (contains lots of scientific research showing why medications actually don't work, and are actually causing much more mental illness than they are resolving.)
Depression - i.e. that feeling you have turned into a zombie, and there is no hope or joy or point to being alive - is actually just a variant of the 'FREEZE' stress reponse.
As well as reading all of the above, try the following posts, too:
I've also got the following resources available on spiritual self-help (you have to sign-up to get them, but I'm not a big 'spamming type' so don't let that stop you:)
14 things you can do RIGHT NOW to boost your mood
And you can can also download my pocket book about understanding depression, called 'Causes and Cures of Depression', too, by going HERE.
Personality disorders come about because people get 'stuck' in an overwhelming stress response that literally hard-wires their brain, almost always as a result of their own traumas and difficult experiences, but also because traumatic responses can be 'inherited' up to 4 generations down the line (this has been discovered by a line of research called 'epigenetics'.)
BH, I intend to start writing a lot more about this 'inherited' aspect to emotional illnesses, as I think it's crucial to understanding what's going on today. Science has shown that 2% of the DNA is actually 'fixed', and that the other 98% - which is referred to as 'RNA', and used to be considered as 'junk DNA' by scientists - is actually flexible, but still inherited.
EG: if you had a family member who went through Auschwitz, God forbid, and who was traumatised so badly by the starvation they experienced (on top of everything else...), that could be the cause of your own massive over-eating issues, even though you grew up in a home where there was plenty of food on the table and never suffered physical deprivation.
The RNA in your genes got changed by your grandparent's experience, but it can be 'changed back' to a healthier mode. How? By educating yourself about what's really going on with this stuff from a true, Jewish and Torah perspective, by putting God in the picture, and by making whatever teshuva you need to make to recognise and fix the bad middot that are actually underneath all of these issues. Like I said - a huge topic, and I haven't really started covering it, but I hope too.
An interesting book on the subject is:
It didn't start with you - by Mark Wolynn
In the meantime, over on spiritual self-help you'll find the more 'prosaic' information about personality disorders, as seen more through the lense of the secular world. Ifyou search for 'personality disorders' on spiritual self-help, it'll bring up literally tens of different posts on the subject. But try the following things to whet your whistle:
Here's where you can find some of the posts I've written that start to pull it all together (although clearly, there's still a lot more stuff to be figured out and discussed.) Emotional illnesses have many spiritual reasons, especially when it comes to Jews. It's not just 'stam' that we have soaring numbers of people struggling with things like depression, anxiety, OCD and personality disorders.
Once you begin to understand that mental health depends on a Jew having a strong connection to God (aka 'emuna'); a strong commitment to acknowledging and fixing their bad middot, or character traits, and that mental illness is also caused by trauma (and which people in the world has been more traumatised than the Jews?) - plus that things are intensifiying because God wants to bring the geula, and only people who are working on themselves, making teshuva and who have a strong connection to God are going to make it - it starts to change the whole picture.
Meds may make you feel a little calmer in the short-term, but they certainly aren't going to get you into the world of truth. Only teshuva, emuna and fixing our underlying bad middot are going to do that.
To get are more 'spiritual' perspective on this issue, I highly recommend reading all the stuff I've posted up under the title 'Unlocking the Secret of the Erev Rav' - if you search that phrase on the site, it should bring up all the podcasts I've done on it, too, as well as the posts.
And then, try the following posts, too:
- How the erev rav and personality disorders are connected
In terms of what you can read to start figuring all this stuff out for yourself and how to start fixing it, try Talk to God and Fix Your Health, which you can download for free by going HERE.
Again, if you use the 'search' box at the top of this site, (and also over on spiritual self-help), you'll find a bunch more resources and interesting articles than the ones I've suggested here. (Another good search time to try is 'Jewish narcissism'.)
If you want me to cover anything specific going forward, please just leave me a comment or email me with what you're interested in learning more about, and I'll do my best to oblige, with God's help.
God wants us all to make it though to the finishing line! But the only way to do that is by holding His hand, and appreciating what's really causing our enormous emotional distress in 2017 from a truly holistic, authentic, emuna-dik perspective. Modern psychiatry simply doesn't have the answers, and by pushing pills as the 'solution' to the problem, they're actually only making things a whole lot worse for everyone.
