As I've mentioned, my kids go to school in the old city, and we live right next to the tram, the place where so many 'incidents' have happened the last couple of weeks. It's clearly a little bit stressful when you hear stuff, then tons of sirens, and your kids are out of the house...
(Clearly, I'm understating this about a thousand percent.) So what do I do, when everything outside my window is chaos?
Number 1: pray
The first thing I do when I hear booms, or shooting, or sirens, or lots of helicopters - and my kids are out of the house - is pray a lot. I ask G-d to give me emuna, and particularly to believe that Ein Od Milvado, there is only Him in the world, and He's behind everything.
Number 2: sedate Triple Warmer
The next thing I do, especially if I realize I'm holding my breath and starting to get a headache in my temples is scrounge around my cupboard for a big bar of chocolate, and then try to calm down the meridian responsible for jacking up my stress response, Triple Warmer. Usually, I’ll either hold my temples for a breath, then take my hands over my ears (with some pressure) and over to my shoulders, deep breathing all the time. Hang the hands on the shoulders, then let drop away whenever it feels good. Repeat as often as you need.
If there's a LOT of booms, and a lot of sirens, I'll also sedate the Triple Warmer acupressure point, which I'll tell you how to do another time. This one is also really good to do just before bed, especially for kids who are feeling a bit anxious or jumpy. It just drains all the excess energy away from the panic response in the body, and helps you calm down, and want to go to sleep.
Number 3: Essential Oils
If I'm getting the stress headache, I'll do one drop of lavender neat on my temples (you should only use tea tree and lavender neat; all other essential oils should be used highly diluted.) If I'm getting the stress neck ache, I'll do geranium and myrrh (I actually made it into a perfume now, so it's a cinch to rub on). If I feel stressed everywhere - back, shoulders, you name it - then it's 5 drops of Roman Chamomile in the bath.
Number 4: Pray, again
If I can't work out if it's fireworks, or firing; or if I start getting text messages from friends asking me 'Are you OK?', or telling me that the nearest incident happened five seconds up the road (as it has already, twice); or if my kids are still out of the house, I do a bit more praying. That G-d should keep my family and Am Yisrael safe. That He should give me emuna, again. That I should remember that it's all going to turn around for the good. Stuff like that.
Usually, all this stuff calms me down, even in a bad situation, fairly fast. If I find I'm stressed for a day or more, then I try to do a long session of hitbodedut (personal prayer), and talk to G-d for at least a couple of hours, until it shifts.
So far, it's always worked.
So to recap: pray, eat chocolate, sedate triple warmer, dab on the oils, and then pray again.
And may we get to a time very soon when we can eat chocolate for happier reasons.
